Whiney Wednesday

Whine - whine - whine. What am I going to do with this child? On the days we don't do school, he sits around reading his reading book and doing bizarre math problems. When I want to do school with him, he whines. I tell him to stop whining. He whines more. I offer him candy if he stops whining. He stops... for a couple minutes. I spank him. He whines. Finally, I sent him to bed. If he's going to whine, he can at least do it out of my ear shot. Do I really need to mention a name here? I think not.

So, Whiney Boy laid in his bed while the other two did their math. Finally, he creeps back into the land of the living. He said he was ready to do math and he sat down and did the whole page. in five minutes. no problems.

I know the obvious solution and I'm leaning that way but can't bring myself to unschool one child while the other two wallow in their books.

I am really wondering if I may have that issue with Nolan too. He wants to do things only on his terms. Glad I'll be able to learn from your experiences! :)

unschool? I see an obvious solution too. And it ain't that!

I think the solution depends on the child, really. If you read my current post about Essie, you'll know the challenges there.

However, for Miguel, we do things a little differently. He isn't big into having him near him teaching. He likes to show me what he's learned and tries to read the instructions and what-not by himself. He's a little guy, just five, but he's good with a list of stuff to do, and then if it's hard, he just comes up to me and asks. It helps him to know, hey, do these things in your own order. He feels empowered by choosing whether to do Phonics first or Handwriting, etc. So, maybe a list will work for him ... ? It sounds like he just wants to do some stuf on his terms, and it's a way of getting him to do what you want but just letting him choose the order and place (ex., he can do his work on the sofa or the table or the floor, etc.)
