May???

Yikes? How did May get here already? I know April just ended, but I don't remember much of January, February, and March. May generally signifies the end, or almost the end, of the school year. While we're just about finished with our math books, we're only on week 24 of our 36 week Sonlight curriculum! That's another 12 weeks (3 months!!). I know we're not limited to the traditional school calendar but I can't help feeling very behind... and I don't think we slacked that much! We're only on lesson 120 of 180 lessons in Sequential Spelling. I'm not taking the blame for that one though! They scheduled lessons by fours... it's designed perfectly for a four day week so that's what we did!

Even though we're only two/thirds done with this year, I can't help looking ahead. I made my first purchase for next year last. I got a great deal on A Beka math books for Adam. I found them on eBay and paid $10 (+$5 shipping) for $35 worth of books. I haven't totally decided what we're using next year but I think it'll look something like this:
  • Sonlight Core 5 for History/Reading/Geography (Adam & Ryan)
  • Sequential Spelling Level II (Adam & Ryan)
  • Apologia Exploring Creation with Astronomy (Adam, Ryan, Evan)
  • Apologia Exploring Creation with Botany (Adam, Ryan, Evan)
  • A Beka Mathematics 6 (Adam)
  • A Beka Mathematics 4 (Ryan)
  • A Beka Mathematics 1 (Evan)
  • A Beka Reading/Phonics 1 (Evan)
  • A Beka Spelling & Language 1 (Evan)
  • Handwriting Without Tears (Evan)

I'm open to suggestions for Bible and Language.

So are you going to use both Botany and Astronomy next year? How are you liking Astronomy so far? Is there enough lessons/info in one book for the whole year? I was considering buying the Botany tomorrow since it's on sale at Christianbook.com. I need suggestions for language as well. I suppose we could use A Beka again but we were bored out of our minds with it.

Since you're open for suggestions...;-)

You might want to look at Bible Study Guide for All Ages for Bible. I like that all the kids can study the same lesson, but the activity pages come in beginner, intermediate and advanced (or something along those lines).

Josh and Megan are LOVING First Language Lessons for grammar, so I'd give that a thumbs up for Evan.

For the older boys, we really like Easy Grammar/Daily Grams.

Just my two-cents' worth. ;-)

You know me. I'm A Beka all the way, BUT I would not recommend their Bible curric. Too Sunday School like. Actually it's the exact same lessons we use in SS! Before we switched to it, we were using Positive Action, I loved it, but they went to a version neutral format, where you look up the verses in whatever version you prefer. So they said. but the answer keys gave the answers in NIV. We're strictly KJV and couldnt support that. But if you don't mind a little extra work looking up your own vereses, the curric was very good. Josh's class still uses it, they have the old books. He just learned about the tribulation, it was all he could talk about on the way home from school today.
