So, I was talking to some other football parents at practice last night. We were having a nice chat when they mentioned their "backwards homeschooled niece." Woah!! She may be backwards and she may be homeschooled but you don't have to say them together like they're dependent on each other.
Of course, I couldn't let that pass! LOL I jumped in with a friendly, "Hey, my kids are homeschooled." I was half-way looking forward to one of those heated discussions where the homeschooled parent gets to make all those wonderful points about why homeschooling is better and, even if you don't agree, none of your business. But, there was some major backpedaling. The aforementioned parents assured me that homeschooling was great except for their niece, since she was an only child, the mom slept all day while the child watched tv, and she scored poorly on tests. I didn't touch the tv thing and I'm not sure how they know what happens in someone else's home all day, every day. But I did get them to understand that she may score poorly on test despite her learning environment. But it wasn't as much fun as a full fledged me vs. you argument. LOL
Later, I was telling Jeff about that conversation. He shared a conversation he'd overheard at football practice....
Kid on Rye's team: Hey, do you get in a lot of trouble at school?
Other Kid on Rye's team: Yeah, he gets in trouble in music class a lot.
Rye: No, that's not me. I'm homeschooled.
Kids on Rye's Team: Wow, really? What's 2x3?
Rye (with disdain): 6
Other Kid: What's 3x3?
Rye: 9
Kids on Team: Oh, okay.
I'm not real certain how to take that. They're only allowed to play with homeschoolers that can multiply? Or they had to stop b/c they didn't know the answer to 3x4?

I don't mind those kind of conversations so much because like anything else, it can be done well or not so well.
I find that folks who bad mouth it most are those that are secretly jealous.
I hate the "oh I don't have the patients" comment.
uhhm, yeah. NO patients here lady,, it's about conviction and you just filled me in on your degree of conviction and I'm not impressed.
That was harsh,, but true. LOL
Wow. I'm kind of surprised about the kids quizzing him. Maybe they were just trying to convince themselves that he still had to learn even though he didn't have to go to school? You know, like, "Oh, well, he may get to stay home but he *still* has to learn multiplication!" I really hope that the ps kids don't just think that hs kids are stupid.
I'm with Crystal on the patience comment. I always say something about how I have less patience every day, but that has nothing to do with our schoolwork - that's the fun part of the day! That's the point where they look at me like I'm insane. ;)
