I'm feeling very discouraged lately. Maybe it's because my husband thinks I should be turning out a couple super geniuses and the true results of my labor more closely resemble Wile E. Coyote.
Why can these children not remember anything? Not very long ago, we spent weeks learning percentages. I remember it clearly b/c it was h.a.r.d! But we learned it. Today, one of Adam's word problems asked him to figure a percentage. He looked like the cliff had just fallen out from under him.
I'm going to stop playing games at MIL's house on Sundays. The kids are supposed to be a shining example of why homeschooling is better than public schools, or at least not any worse. Instead my kids bumble their way through dinner and can't remember what a thesaurus is when the word comes up in a game of Catch Phrase. We just used a thesaurus last week!
They'd be just as dumb in a school setting, but at least it wouldn't be my fault. {sigh}

I'm sorry, but it's really nice to know other people had a day like I had today!
Why does even the simplest math facts fall out of their heads during a break from school?
We started back late because of a death in the family and that extra time off turned math into a foreign concept apparently!
I found you through Stephanie. I'm enjoying reading your blog.
Nnn-hnn, but can they spell thesaurus? Homeschoolers are GREAT spellers.
Well, while I hate that you are discouraged, I must say that I am glad that I am not the only one. I think that when they are homeschooled we expect them to remember everything because we taught it to them, so we know what they should know. Also, I think in some settings they are dissected more. MIL on Sunday may be an example.

You know, I'm not a overly experienced homeschooler, but this has been by experience. My oldest just was not remembering her math at all from one week to the next. So we set math aside for about 3 months. Did no formal math at all. When we came back to it, it all just "clicked" for her. If something is frustrating, we set it aside and focus on our other subjects. Teacher's Manuals are a guide not a rule book, IMO. Be encouraged. Your kids will learn so much in spite of you, not because of you, so don't think anything is your fault!
