President's Day

The boys wanted to celebrate President's Day by playing Playstation. HA! I assured them that George Washington and Abraham Lincoln never played video games and therefore, that was not an appropriate way to celebrate their birthdays. While I'm not positive about George Washington, I know Abraham Lincoln was homeschooled! And Washington was probably at least partially schooled at home. So what do you think would be a good way to honor their birthdays??? Hmmmm.....

So we did a full day of school, hee hee hee. Jeff was home but he pretty much stayed out of the way. He did harass, um, I mean HELP Ryan with a math problem. He was trying to get Rye to show all the steps but he didn't even know all the steps himself. He knew how to get the answer but he didn't know all those itty bitty steps that A Beka uses. So when Ryan started doing the steps, Jeff was the one confused. LOL

I hadn't noticed your blog name change -- love it!!! My quiver is quite full, too. ;-)

Hey, an amazing thing -- we celebrated President's Day the same way you did!! Isn't that incredible? lol

If you scroll down (you'd probably be better off to use your "find" function on your computer), in the link I gave in my blog yesterday, the author probably explains echo reading much better than I can. Basically, it's you reading with your child, letting him read what he can and you supplying any unknown words. You say the word and he repeats it before going on. This helps avoid losing the storyline amid lots of "sounding out." I will qualify that and say that I encourage my kids to sound out CVC words that they should be able to do easily. Other than that, though, I supply them, they repeat and we go on. So far so good.

I can so relate to poor Jeff. Julie teaches math in our class, so when one of the kids comes to me with a problem, I just have no clue. I usually pull out the teacher book. It has all the answers. Or ask SG, she's brilliant.

How un-homeschooling-y of me. We took the day off. Bad Maria, bad Maria. LOL

Preston had the day off, so who the heck can homeschool when there's a Daddy in the house? Not this gal. Ancient China, math and phonics CANNOT compete against a daddy who pretends to be a grizzly bear and chase the kids. ;-)

Like Maria we find it hard to do school when Daddy is home- oh wait- we unschool pretty much all the time LOL- our day looked much like yours too! ;-)
